A little something about this book taken from the front inside cover. " This book is not for the faint of heart or weak in spirit. It's not for skeptics who don't believe in fairy tales or the powerful forces of good. It's only for the brave and intrepid souls like you, who will stare down evil in all its forms.
Inspired by the critically acclaimed film written and directed by Oscar winner Guillermo del Toro, and reimagined by New York times bestselling author Corneila Funke, this haunting tale takes readers to a darkly magical and war-torn world filled with richly drawn characters including trickers fauns, murderous men, child-eating monsters, courageous rebels, and a long-lost princess hoping to be reunited with her family.
Perfect for fans of the movie and readers who are new to del Toro's visionary work alike, this atmospheric and absorbing novel is a portal to another universe, where there is no wall between the real and the imagined. A daring, unforgettable collaboration between two brilliant storytellers."
It starts out by telling about a little girl that lived in a underground realm, where there is no pain. This girl's name was Princess Moanna she dreamt of the human world. She dreamt precisely of the perfect blue sky and the many sea of clouds; she also dreamt of the sun, grass and what the rain taste like. one day she decide to escape from her body guards and came to the human world. Needless to say the sun caused her to forget who she was or where she cam from. The Princess roamed the earth, and suffered the cold, sickness, and pain, and of course she died.
" Her father, the king never gave up looking for her. He knew with out a doubt that Moanna's spirit to immortal and he hoped one day that it would come bake to him. Even if in another body or another time or even perhaps in another place. Her father made up his mind to wait. No matter how long it took he would wait. pgs.IX,X
There is a movie that is based on this book. The time of this story was suppose to happen was in the year 1944, a Spanish war. The girl's name was Ofelia, her mother died while giving birth to her baby brother. Ofelia father was a Tailor who made clothes for Ofelia, but he had died in the war.
Her stepfather was a very mean man, so mean he enjoyed torturing his prisoners, he did this to get information about the resistance. He only married Ofelia's mother to have a son to carry on his name.
The book is better than the movie in that it has little stories in it like The Sculptor's Promise, pgs. 32-37 The Labyrinth pgs. 62-67, The Mill that lost Its Pond pgs. 89-92, The watchmaker pgs. 110-113, The Razor and the Knife pgs. 136-139, The bookbinder pgs. 161-167, When the Faun Fell in Love pgs. 183-187, The Tailor who Bargained with Death pgs. 214-218 And so on. The end was death for Ofelia for she was shot by her stepfather, because she wanted to take her little brother to her kingdom. But the Faun wanted her to sacrifice her brother because he told her that was the only way she could return to the underground kingdom. But she refused, after she handed her brother back to her mean cruel stepfather. Her stepfather shot her. but her stepfather met his end, because the resistance shot him after he handed his son to his housekeeper.
This book I would give five stars. so if you get a chance I highly recommend it.
